Bio Picture Marc Gurley
Owner / General Manager

Marc's musical journey began at age 11 when he agreed to play drums with a band performing Deep Purple's Smoke on the Water live in front of his entire school.  The only problem was - he had never even held drumsticks in his hands!  He pulled it off on sheer will and was hooked for life.  From there he went on to play drums, keys, and sing lead vocals with multiple rock bands, where he performed countless shows accross the Southeast.  His career includes time as the frontman for the original line up of alternative rock band Dust for Life.  With DFL he recorded an album at Powerhouse Studios which went on to gain top rotation on rock radio, and he and DFL performed and shared the bill on a regular basis with powerhouse acts such as Saliva, King's X, and Drivin N Cryin to name a few.

Marc is a graduate of Memphis University School and went on to earn a BA in Business Management from Southern Methodist University.  He owned and operated a successful multi-unit golf retail business.  However, the passion for music never faded, and School of Rock popped up on Marc's radar once he began to explore selling the golf business.  As a father of three, Marc immediately understood the mission of SoR, "Inspiring kids to rock...on stage and in life."  It quickly became evident that Marc's unique combination of business and music experience made him the perfect fit to own and run a School of Rock.  So in 2012 he joined the School of Rock family and he was lucky enough to do it in the birthplace of rock 'n' roll - Memphis.

Marc is still active as a musician performing lead vocals for the rock cover band, Secondfloor Saints, but running the School of Rock Memphis is truly his dream job.  "I am so excited to bring the School of Rock to Memphis.  If you want your kids to learn music, then they need to play music.  The same way you learn a language by speaking the language.  SoR removes the shackles and isolated nature of traditional instruction and places the student in an environment where he/she is free to speak the language of music along with others who are following their own path.  This is exactly how my musical journey began over 30 years ago, and I can't tell you how excited I am to bring this concept to kids in my own hometown - where music is in our blood."
